The hepatitis C virus can only be transmitted by blood transfer. But exposure to tiny amounts of blood is enough to cause infection.
There is no vaccine against hepatitis C. Many conferences occur each year to get more information about it like CHPA.
Here are some steps you can take to avoid getting hepatitis C.
Never share needles
Intravenous drug users are at greatest risk of being infected with hepatitis C. In addition to needles, the virus may be present in other equipment used with illicit drugs. Even sharing a straw bill or a dollar while sniffing cocaine could lead to hepatitis C virus transmission. Bleeding in the nasal passages frequently occurs when cocaine is taken in this way, and microscopic droplets can enter the straw and be passed on to the next user, even if they are not visible.
Avoid direct exposure to blood
If you are a health care professional, take precautions to avoid direct contact with blood. Any tool that collects blood at the workplace should be disposed of safely or sterilized appropriately to prevent infection with hepatitis C virus.
Do not share personal items
Many of the objects we use every day are sometimes exposed to blood. Often people cut themselves shaving, or their gums bleed while brushing their teeth. Even small amounts of blood can potentially infect someone, so it’s important not to share things like toothbrushes, razors, nail clippers and hair clippers, and scissors. If you are already infected with hepatitis C, be sure to keep personal items, such as razors and toothbrushes, separate and out of the reach of children.
Choose tattoo and piercing salons carefully
Use only rooms that follow proper sanitary procedures. A new disposable needle and ink should be used for each client. If in doubt, find out about their disposable products and sanitary procedures before getting a tattoo or piercing.
Prevention through sex
Hepatitis C is rarely sexually transmitted, but the risk of hepatitis C is higher if you have a sexually transmitted disease, HIV or multiple sexual partners or if you have violent sex.
